Simon Pegg Declares the World’s End His Favorite Movie in the Cornetto Trilogy

3 min read

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One star Simon Pegg has revealed his favorite movie in his and director Edgar Wright’s beloved Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy. And it’s probably not the movie you would expect. Speaking with DiscussingFilm, Pegg declared that the somewhat more divisive (but still critically acclaimed) The World’s End is his favorite in the series, with the actor choosing the sci-fi comedy over both Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.

“You know, my favorite of the Cornetto trilogy is The World’s End because it’s the least audience friendly. It’s the darkest of the three. It’s the most challenging, and I love the idea of actually putting the audience in a position where they have to feel a little bit uncomfortable and not necessarily cozy into the familiar. So whatever we do next, it’ll be difficult that’s for sure.”

After stating that we need “new stuff” and “new ideas” in movies, and that audiences need to be “challenged,” Pegg revealed that whatever project he and Wright are working on right now will hew closer to The World’s End than anything they’ve done before.

Released in 2013 and directed by Edgar Wright from a screenplay by Wright and Simon Pegg, The World’s End stars Pegg, Nick Frost, Paddy Considine, Martin Freeman, Eddie Marsan, Rosamund Pike as a group of friends attempting to finally complete the epic pub crawl they left incomplete 20 years ago. Returning to their hometown, they are inadvertently burdened with the task of saving humanity.

Much like the prior installments in The Cornetto Trilogy, The World’s End was both a critical and commercial success. However, the movie is largely seen by fans as the quote — unquote ‘worst’ movie in the franchise, and no doubt many be surprised to learn that it is in fact Pegg’s #1.

Do Not Expect Any More Installments in the Cornetto Trilogy

While fans have wondered whether we would ever see any further installments in the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, particularly sequels, Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright have since stated that they have little interest in returning to the zombie-infested world of Shaun of the Dead or the post-apocalypse of The World’s End.

Asked last month whether we would ever see a Shaun of the Dead 2, Pegg said, “If I ever do an Instagram Live or whatever, people are always like, ‘I need Shaun of the Dead 2 in my life.’ And I’m like, ‘No, you don’t f***ing need Shaun of the Dead 2! The last thing you need is Shaun of the Dead 2! It’s done. Move on!’”

There was once a time when a Shaun of the Dead sequel was suggested by Pegg himself. Given the title From Dusk Till Shaun, Pegg’s idea involved bringing back the same cast from the first movie but telling a story about vampires rather than zombies. Clearly Pegg’s feelings towards follow-ups have changed, but fear not, as the actor is now working on a brand-new project with Edgar Wright as we speak.
