Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Photos Drop Ahead of ‘Subspace Rhapsody’ Episode

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (SNW) is going where no member of the franchise has gone before. In the next-to-last episode of Season 2, the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise will turn over a new leaf. Rather than engaging in epic space fights with Romulans and Klingons, Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and company will perform the first Broadway musical-style show ever presented in a Star Trek project.

In addition to the series regulars, the photos reveal that The Vampire Diaries alum, Paul Wesley, will also return to join the crew on their West Side Story-esque adventure. Wesley finally appeared on the show as the SNW’s regular timeline version of James T. Kirk in Season 2, Episode 6, Lost in Translation.

The synopsis for “Subspace Rhapsody” reads:

In the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2’s penultimate episode ‘Subspace Rhapsody,’ an accident with an experimental quantum probability field causes everyone on the U.S.S. Enterprise to break uncontrollably into song, but the real danger is that the field is expanding and beginning to impact other ships — allies and enemies alike.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will try something new with Subspace Rhapsody by presenting Trekkies with a musical installment the likes of which has never been seen before in the 23rd century. The synopsis to SNW’s ninth episode alludes to the fact that other enemy and friendly ships are affected by the quantum probability field, too. So, is it possible fans will get to see Klingons jazz dancing their way through the corridors of battlecruisers and Birds-of-Prey?

In a clip circulating on social media for the upcoming episode of SNW, Spock (Ethan Peck) and Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) are attempting to send subspace messages across thousands of light years instantaneously. And it’s Pelia (Carol Kane) who suggests they try sending music rather than just words.

At Spock’s behest, Uhura selects a song for their experiment. And she picks Cole Porter’s Anything Goes, which was originally written for the 1934 musical with the same title. However, Porter’s song has been covered countless times by artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and many more over the years. Even Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga collaborated together on a duet of the classic tune. Stream SNW: Subspace Rhapsody on Paramount+ when it drops August 3. And check out the trailer below:
