While speaking to Entertainment Weekly, The Crowded Room creator and showrunner Akiva Goldsman revealed that he’s interested in seeing a spin-off starring Amanda Seyfried and Christopher Abbott. During the interview (which occurred prior to the start of the SAG-AFTRA strike), Goldsman told EW that he was immediately captivated by Abbott’s performance on The Crowded Room.

The showrunner said, “I too had this reaction to Chris Abbott, who comes in late to the show. You’re just like, ‘Well, now I just want to watch a show about him and Amanda solving low-stakes murder mysteries in New York.'”

The Crowded Room is a drama series that stars Tom Holland as Danny Sullivan, a teenager with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) on trial for attempted murder. On the show, Seyfried plays therapist Rya Goodwin and Abbott plays attorney Stan Camisa. The Crowded Room also stars Emmy Rossum, Sasha Lane, Thomas Sadoski, Henry Eikenberry, Will Chase, Lior Raz, and Henry Zaga.

The show’s series finale saw Rya and Stan forced to find a new defense for Danny after Danny’s mother Candy (played by Rossum) lies under oath about her son’s being sexually abused in addition to denying Danny’s suicide attempt. Ultimately, Danny is found not guilty by reason of insanity and sent to receive treatment at a mental health facility.

The outlet notes that a spin-off involving Rya and Stan from The Crowded Room could mean the chance for a deeper dive into the pair’s backstories. In the series, both characters struggled emotionally. Rya dealt with the pressure of being a woman working in a male-dominated field and attempting to find balance between motherhood and having a career. As for Stan, the lawyer and Vietnam veteran in Apple TV+ series suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder as well as guilt due to his actions during the war.

Akiva Goldsman Said That Christopher Abbott’s Character Stan “Brings With Him His Own Guilt and the Feeling of Self-Blame”

Goldsman stated, “[Stan] brings with him his own guilt and the feeling of self-blame, which is so central to this whole piece. I guess, ultimately, it’s about what we blame ourselves for and how important it is to forgive ourselves — and to forgive those around us after that — because this kind of guilt that we carry, this kind of shame that we carry, that we see in the mirror, is so debilitating.”

The creator added that those types of complex emotions are “so often not in any way based in any version of the truth” but instead “something we’ve inherited” over the course of our lives.

Goldsman said, “[It’s something] that somebody’s put on us and we’ve taken it in and now we call it our own. If we can let go of that, well, great. And that’s sort of what this show is trying to frame in different ways, with different characters, suffering their own shame.”

The entire season of The Crowded Room is currently available to watch on Apple TV+.
