Talk to Me Directors Have Already Begun Work on a Sequel

3 min read

The directing duo behind the surprise horror hit Talk to Me, Danny and Michael Philippou, already have ideas in mind for a sequel. In fact, they’re more than ideas, with the filmmakers revealing they have already written scenes should Talk to Me spawn a follow-up. Speaking with GamesRadar+, Danny Philippou offered details of the “extensive” bible that the pair have put together for the supernatural world of Talk to Me.

“When we were writing the first film, we couldn’t help but write scenes for a sequel as well. Our bible on the movie is so extensive. We’ve got this massive mythology bible where we broke down every single spirit that the kids connected with, every single rule, every single part of the hand, and the history behind it. So I think there’s so much to explore.”

The director continued, declaring his excitement to potentially return to the realm of ghosts and spirits in a possible Talk to Me 2. And, considering that the first outing has been met with stellar reviews from critics and has massively overperformed at the box office, a sequel is now looking pretty likely.

“I’d be so excited about the idea of doing a sequel, and there’s a hundred different directions that you could take it. So yeah, oh my gosh, it would be so cool to do a sequel. I’d love that opportunity.”

Directed by Danny and Michael Philippou (who are collectively known as RackaRacka) in their feature film directorial debut, and written by Danny Philippou and Bill Hinzman, Talk to Me begins when a group of friends discover how to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand. They become hooked on the new thrill, until one of them goes too far and unleashes terrifying supernatural forces.

While we now know how well Talk to Me will do with critics and thus on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes (note: very well), there was a time when Danny and Michael Philippou were deeply concerned about the rating that their feature film debut would receive. As Michael explains…

“Our biggest fear, when we were making the film, was what the Rotten Tomatoes score would be. I judge films, whether I should or not, off of Rotten Tomatoes sometimes, so I was just terrified of it getting a negative reaction. Some of my favorite films are rotten. But yeah, this is our film, I was like, ‘Please be fresh!'”

While it’s certainly sad to read that Rotten Tomatoes has become the subject of some anxiety for fledgling filmmakers, the Philippou brothers had nothing to worry about whatsoever. Talk to Me now stands at a hugely impressive 94% on the website, with the consensus reading, “With a gripping story and impressive practical effects, Talk to Me spins a terrifically creepy 21st-century horror yarn built on classic foundations.”

Starring Sophie Wilde, Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird, Otis Dhanji, and Miranda Otto, Talk to Me was released theatrically on 28 July 2023.
