3 min read

The Star Trek franchise is one of the biggest franchises in the world. Spanning decades, Star Trek now has several entry points from over the years, and with adventures on both the big and small screens, it can be difficult for new fans to know exactly how and where to start. Well, speaking exclusively with MovieWeb, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth have revealed what they think is the best way into the expansive world of Star Trek. And it probably isn’t what you would expect. As Roth explained it…

“I think we both feel very good about Star Trek: Prodigy being a fantastic entry point because Prodigy came from the standpoint of people who don’t know the Star Trek world. The characters themselves are learning as they go what it all means to be Starfleet and be Star Trek. I think from that standpoint, for people who are feeling intimidated by 57 years by the number of shows or episodes, it is a great way to understand what Star Trek is about through the characters learning the same things themselves. I think that was one of the amazing creative decisions the Hagermans [Brothers] came up with.”

So, not Star Trek: The Original Series, any of the movies, or Star Trek: The Next Generation, but the animated series Star Trek: Prodigy is where Roddenberry and Roth guide newcomers when it comes to delving into the franchise for the first time. While this will no doubt come as a surprise to many, Roth was not quite finished discussing Star Trek: Prodigy adding…

For those perhaps unaware, Star Trek: Prodigy is one of the latest outings in the Star Trek series. An animated television series created by Kevin and Dan Hageman for the streaming service Paramount+ and Nickelodeon, Star Trek: Prodigy lands audiences in 2383, five years after the USS Voyager returned to Earth at the end of Star Trek: Voyager, and follows a motley crew of young aliens who find an abandoned Starfleet ship, the USS Protostar, in the Tars Lamora prison colony. Taking control of the ship, they must learn to work together as they make their way from the Delta Quadrant to the Alpha Quadrant.

Starring Brett Gray, Ella Purnell, Jason Mantzoukas, Angus Imrie, Rylee Alazraqui, Dee Bradley Baker, Jimmi Simpson, John Noble, and Kate Mulgrew, Star Trek: Prodigy premiered on the streaming platform back in 2021, and was met with positive reviews from critics, even winning a Children’s and Family Emmy Award. Sadly, while a second season was on the cards, this was suddenly canceled along with the first series being pulled from Paramount+. Which might make it a little difficult to track down should you wish to follow Roddenberry and Roth’s advice…

The Star Trek franchise continues, with new projects set to grace the big and small screen in the future, including Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Many more Star Trek-related projects (including the long-awaited Star Trek 4) are currently in various stages of development.
