Simon Pegg & Edgar Wright Now Working On Next Movie

3 min read

Spaced and Shaun of the Dead pair Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright are now working on their next project, which they have revealed will be an original story and not part of their beloved Cornetto Trilogy. Speaking with DiscussingFilm, Pegg revealed that he and the Hot Fuzz director are now “kicking ideas around” and are working on “syncing” their diaries.

“It’s not going to be another sort of Cornetto film in that those movies were specifically genre riffs, which addressed the idea of the collective versus the individual. There are certain kinds of thematic consistencies between those three movies which make them a trilogy – it’s not just the ice cream, it’s a series of connecting thematic details.”

Instead of weaving another tale on the same tapestry as the likes of Shaun of the Dead and The World’s End, the next Pegg/Wright movie will be something entirely different.

“With what do next, we want to be completely different from that. We don’t want to do a take on action movies or a take on sci-fi or a take on horror. We want to make a movie that is totally its own thing, existing outside of the Cornetto trilogy. My desire, really, is to do something super different.”

While the news that the next Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright project will not be part of the Cornetto world, the idea of what the duo might create next is certainly an exciting one nonetheless.

Fans of the likes of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz have often wondered whether any sequels would ever materialize. While there has been discussions of follow-ups in the past, Pegg reveals that he and Wright have no interest in turning the trilogy into a major franchise full of sequels and spinoffs.

“At the risk of disappointing people, we get a lot of requests to “sequalize” all three of those movies. I feel like it’s a lazy impulse for people to embrace familiarity and just accept the same thing again. I’m very flattered by it, and it’s never anything but edifying to be to have people say, “Oh, we would love to see more.” I get that! But what we really need is new stuff. We need new ideas. We need to be challenged.”

Pegg continues, revealing that the least popular (though still critically acclaimed) The World’s End is his favorite movie in the Cornetto Trilogy, and declaring that his and Edgar Wright’s next project will take a similar approach to the “darkest” and most “uncomfortable” installment.

“You know, my favorite of the Cornetto trilogy is The World’s End because it’s the least audience friendly. It’s the darkest of the three. It’s the most challenging, and I love the idea of actually putting the audience in a position where they have to feel a little bit uncomfortable and not necessarily cozy into the familiar. So whatever we do next, it’ll be difficult that’s for sure.”

Simon Pegg can currently be seen saving the world alongside Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, and Rebecca Ferguson in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. The actor will continue to save the world in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, which is scheduled to be released on June 28, 2024, by Paramount Pictures.
