Could The Meg End up Spawning a Trilogy?

Released back in 2018, the first The Meg introduced audiences to The Stath’s cynical expert diver Jonas Taylor and his battle with the beasts that lurk within the depths of the Mariana Trench. Despite mixed reviews from critics, The Meg was a massive box office success for Warner Bros. Pictures, grossing over $530 million worldwide. No doubt the studio is hoping for a similar catch with the sequel.

And should Meg 2: The Trench be as much of a hit as its predecessor, director Ben Wheatley will be swimming in the wake, as the filmmaker hopes to return for a third adventure. “You don’t want to talk about it until Meg 2 is out, but I hope [to see a third installment],” the director said regarding a possible Meg 3. “There’s a lot more to explore in that world. It’s very rich. The international-ness of it is very interesting.”

To achieve that same success, Wheatley plans to lean into what made The Meg so well-liked with audiences. “What’s so smart about the first film is that it’s not Rush Hour,” he said. “It’s not East-meets-West, ‘Oh, we’re all confused about each other.’ It’s just people working together, and being in an everyday adventure, and the people just happen to come from places all over the world. I think that’s good for audiences, and it’s a good message as well.”

Audiences don’t have to wait too much longer for Meg 2: The Trench, as it’s scheduled to hit theaters on August 4, 2023.
