The Disney+ original series has generated some mix reactions since its release past month. Although at the beginning it seemed like an interesting project with a style similar to other more mature productions from the Marvel Cinematic Universe such as Captain America: The Winter Soldier, things started to fall apart as the show continued, and it completely stumbled by the end. But there was a good thing that Secret Invasion opened the door to: many fan theories.

Starring returning MCU stars Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Don Cheadle, Martin Freeman, Cobie Smulders, and Ben Mendelsohn, along with newcomers Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke and Kingsley Ben-Adir, the show centered on Nick Fury’s attempt to stop a Skrull’s invasion ongoing on Earth. But the alien breed have already infiltrated in many powerful positions, taking the place of important people, even some really close to Fury.

One of the biggest surprises Secret Invasion revealed was that Don Cheadle’s Rhodey has been a Skrull for a while now. Fans in fact think it was since Captain America: Civil War, and director Ali Selim agrees. While speaking with ComicBook.com, Selim shared his thoughts on Rhodey’s journey as a Skrull:

“A lot of people have asked about, ‘Definitively, when did Rhodey…? I think his legs not working in the end of episode six and him being in the hospital gown points to [Captain America: Civil War]. And, from there, does it have to be definitive, or is it more fun for the audience to go back and revisit every moment, every Rhodey moment and look at it with a different lens now that they think, ‘Oh, he might’ve been a Skrull there.’ And make the decision for themselves, or it’ll be answered in Armor War.”

The biggest shock about Rhodey’s identity revelation wasn’t the fact he was a Skrull, fans in fact have been thinking that for a long time. But finding out he’s been an infiltrated alien since Civil War means he has missed some really important and relevant events within the MCU. For example, the real Rhodey doesn’t even know about Thanos, the blip or even the death of his best friend Tony Stark. He doesn’t know Tony had a daughter.

And he’s not the only one that hasn’t been himself lately, of course. Secret Invasion also revealed that Martin Freeman’s Everett Ross has also been a Skrull for a while.

Ross is not one of the main characters from the franchise, so his appearances in movies or series are sporadic, which makes it harder to know when he was replaced, although many fans believe it was after Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which was actually the last time the character showed up in an MCU project.
