Barbie’s Box Office Boffo Stands at $775 million Worldwide After its Second Weekend

The bright-pink blitz of Barbie on the box office cannot be stopped. Greta Gerwig’s film adaptation of the Mattel doll finished in first place both domestically and internationally for the second weekend in a row. And Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Ken’s (Ryan Gosling) big-screen adventure scored excellent numbers in cinemas with an impressive $93 million in the United States (per Box Office Mojo). Now, the billion-dollar mark is well within range for Gerwig’s smash hit. Barbie also received a resounding endorsement from none other than filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola.

Coppola said in one of his Instagram stories last Friday via Variety:

“I have yet to see them [Barbenheimer], but the fact that people are filling big theaters to see them and that they are neither ‘sequels’ nor ‘prequels’… no number attached to them meaning they are true one-off’s is victory for cinema.”
At the time of this writing, Barbie has tallied $351.4 million in the U.S. However, the film has done even better business outside of the states, with an astounding $423.1 million globally. And that gaudy total is with the film only making $25.2 million in China.
Gerwig’s movie performed best internationally in the United Kingdom, with $61.6 million overall. Barbie fans also came out strong in Mexico, and the picture has made a total of $41.4 million there. The film has played well in Brazil and Australia, too, with totals of $33.5 million and $30.6 million respectively.
Barbie Is Number #1 at the Box Office Again
While Barbie reigns supreme worldwide, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer easily took the silver medal at the box office — Oppenheimer sits at $400.4 million worldwide after its second weekend of release. The historical drama made $46.2 million in the U.S., and it nearly doubled the numbers brought in by the new Haunted Mansion. The Disney film only made $24.2 million domestically, and it didn’t get any help overseas with only $9.1 million. With those numbers, it’s frightening to realize that the film has little chance to even recoup its whopping $150-million budget — much less make a profit.
And while the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes lumber along, Oppenheimer is going to actually benefit from the absence of Gran Turismo in theaters until August 25. Gran Turismo was originally slated to open on August 8, but the film’s release was pushed because of the strikes. That means Oppenheimer will have the opportunity to keep its premium IMAX screens, at least through Wednesday, August 16 or Thursday, August 17. A statement released by IMAX (via Collider) reads:
In light of its extraordinary performance, IMAX is extending OPPENHEIMER’s run an additional week through August 16/17, with plans to bring-back IMAX showtimes of OPPENHEIMER in the late summer/fall, as availability permits.
Sound of Freedom came in fourth over the weekend with $12.4 million, while Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One took fifth place with $10.7 million. Meanwhile, the horror film Talk to Me opened in the No. 6 spot with $10 million, which is A24’s best opening since Hereditary took in $13.6 million in 2018.
